Joseph Zentmayer Compound Monocular MicroscopeThis brass compound monocular microscope was made by Joseph Zentmayer, of Philadelphia, in 1880. The model featured below was redrawn from photographs of the original microscope, which is part of the Billings microscope collection at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington DC. The microscope is presented attached to its mahogany case, which serves as the base, through a Lister limb on a compass joint. Attached to the lower end of the limb is a plate containing a short arm and gimbal, which serves as a holder for the single mirror. The square stage has several specimen clips and a half-inch central aperture. The body tube has a rack for focusing, a draw tube, and a single compound objective.
