George Sterrop Screw-Barrel MicroscopeThis microscope, which is very similar to the original Wilson screw-barrel microscope, was made by London instrument designer George Sterrop in 1730. The model featured below was redrawn from a photograph of the original microscope, which is part of the Billings microscope collection at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington DC. Housed on a wooden box, the microscope barrel is fashioned from brass and has a brass spiral spring. The barrel is attached to a scroll with a wing nut, and the scroll is fastened to the box. An accessory drawer contains three lenses, five ivory sliders, and a single lens carrier for opaque objects. BACK TO EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MICROSCOPES Questions or comments?
