English Compass MicroscopeThe frame of this microscope is engraved "R.M.S. No. 21", but the origin is unknown. The microscope is reviewed in Gerard Turner's book The Great Age of the Microscope. Built along the lines of then-contemporary compass microscope design, this model has a brass frame with a turned ivory handle. The microscope is focused by means of a large screw pressing against a leaf spring. An objective (missing in this specimen) is placed in the circular holder at the end of the microscope. Specimens are secured by gripping with a forceps-stage having three prongs. BACK TO EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MICROSCOPES Questions or comments? Send us an email.© 1998-2022 by Michael W.
