Sliding-Stage Single Lens MicroscopeThis rather unusual microscope is a part of the Golub Collection at the University of California in Berkeley. The maker and country of origin are unknown, but it no doubt originated in western Europe during the second half of the eighteenth century. The microscope contains a very large concave mirror, located beneath the substage, that adequately illuminates the specimen, which is placed on the sliding stage for observation. Focus is achieved by sliding the stage up and down on the rails while looking through the eyepiece-ocular that is positioned at the apex of the stand. A bi-convex lens serves to illuminate oblique specimens, and a small arm is present on the stage that assists in sample positioning. BACK TO EIGHTEENTH CENTURY MICROSCOPES Questions or comments?
