Amici Achromatic MicroscopeGiovanni Battista Amici introduced his first achromatic microscope lens system in 1827, following the work of John Dollond. The microscope illustrated below was introduced in a variety of different configurations starting in 1850. This achromatic microscope has the unusual feature of a quad-eye tube head that allows four individuals to simultaneously view a specimen. The head/body/objective combination is secured in a circular clamp to the main limb of the microscope at a 45-degree angle. Focus is achieved with a rack and pinion mechanism activated by a knurled knob to move the stage up and down while the rest of the microscope remains stationary. Beneath the circular stage is a condenser lens and a plano-concave mirror both of which have some degree of adjustment. Amici also offered models that sported both monocular and binocular heads, as well as several different objectives. BACK TO NINETEENTH CENTURY MICROSCOPES Questions or comments?
