Euchlanis rotifers have glasslike shells called loricas. When threatened, they withdraw like turtles into the lorica. While most are littoral, E. arenosa is psammophylic, living in soft sandy soils. It lacks an eyespot, which it does not need in that dark, sandy habitat.
