Water mites belong to the arachnid suborder Hydracarina and have a worldwide distribution. They live in all types of freshwater bodies, tree holes, hot springs, deep lakes, and torrential waterfalls. A few species even live in oceans. The water mite is very small and has leg hairs that help the mite propel itself through the water.
