QX3 Time-Lapse Movie GalleryTrinitrotoluene (TNT)
This organic chemical explosive is synthesized in the laboratory by careful nitration of toluene. It reacts vigorously with reducing agents and must be detonated by a high velocity initiator such as nitramine or by efficient concussion. When recrystallized from the melt, TNT will slowly crystallize, forming beautiful dendritic needle-like crystals. The time-lapse movie was made using a modified version of the Intel Play QX3 microscope equipped for polarized light illumination with a full-wave (first order) retardation plate.
