Vacuum Tube Diodes

Before the invention of semiconductor diode devices, vacuum tubes were the candidates of choice for the rectification of alternating current. This tutorial demonstrates how a simple diode vacuum tube works.

The slider is used to increase current flow in the vacuum tube filament. This in turn causes the cathode to glow and release electrons that are illustrated as a gaseous glow within the glass envelope. As the current is increased, the graph below the tube indicates the level at which rectification occurs.
