Cholesterol is a steroid that occurs in almost all animal fats, as well as in blood, bile, and cell membranes. It is an important hormone that acts as a precursor in a variety of biochemical reactions. Cholesterol-rich foods include meat, fish, poultry, seafood, egg yolks, and a variety of dairy products.
