The State of Texas

The State of Texas

Maps of the state of Texas are one of the most popular silicon doodles placed on integrated circuits, primarily because many chip designers live and work in the state. We have seen many versions on Texas Instruments chips as well as those from Advanced Micro Devices and Motorola. The photomicrograph above illustrates yet another version of the map, which was placed on a Thomson/Mostek RAM chip made in the mid-1980s (Mostek was located in Texas). This chip also carries a map of France, presumably due to the Thomson (headquartered in France) part of the collaboration. Note that the small "bumps" on the Texas map do not represent cities, but are merely contaminants from the fabrication process.
