Optical Illusions:
Moiré Pattern Generator

Explore how changing the moiré pattern from bars to circles and dots affects how the illusion is perceived. This tutorial combines a rotating foreground with a stationary background pattern to create a wide spectrum of optical illusion effects.

To operate the tutorial, first click the Auto button and it will turn into a red Manual button. At the same time, the foreground pattern will start to rotate. Use the arrow buttons to the left and right of the Auto button to change rotation direction. The pull-down menus control the type of pattern from Concentric Circles to Radial Lines to Dots in a Grid Pattern, and finally to Parallel Lines. Experiment with the different combinations and observe the numerious effects displayed by this pattern generator.
