I dont know why this didnt occur to me before but it seems that chip designers like to doodle as much as the rest of us. And where better to doodle than at work? Or, more to the point, on your work?
Molecular Expressions have spent some time tracking this chip art down and photgraphing it through microscopes. The story behind The Canine makes me laugh. The "artist" included the image on the chip "to irritate the chief designer" who got his own back by including the culprits home phone number on the next batch of chips with a message to call the number "If you have any problems or questions about this chip..."
Theres also lots of other photomicrographs about all sort of other "photographing stuff through a microscope" things including Beers from all around the world under the microscope. Bizzare stuff indeed.
