Native Americans (Tobacco)

Photomicrograph of Tobacco

Native Americans base their traditional religion on a great respect for nature. Tribes south of the Great Lakes cultivated tobacco for ceremonial use. It was believed that the smoke carried the prayers of the people on Earth to the Power Above. Gifts of tobacco were made to elder tribe members by visitors or less-senior members during meetings or tribal ceremonies. The photomicrograph above illustrates crystallites made from tobacco extract.
