Methotrexate

Photograph of Methotrexate under the microscope

Methotrexate is an experimental antimetabolic chemosterilant that shows promise in control of insects through sterilization. This ubiquitous chemical also has medicinial value in humans as both an anti-cancer agent and has been used to treat arthritis. The drug acts by inhibition of dihydrofolic acid reductase, resulting in an inhibition of the synthesis of purine nucleotides and thymidylate.
