Quartz Crystal Pendant

Quartz crystal was thought to have special properties by both European and Native American cultures. While the crystal cross shown above is thought to have been made by a native artisan based on manufacturing techniques, this pendant was probably made in the Old World. The large quantity of imported jewelry and other luxury items recovered at San Luis belies a commonly held belief that the Spanish missions were impoverished outposts.
