High Density Columnar Hexatic Liquid Crystalline DNA

During controlled drying experiments with isotropic DNA solutions, small batonnets initially form when the solution reaches a critical value near 250 milligrams per milliliter, depending upon the counterion concentration. The photomicrograph above illustrates the texture obtained when batonnets first form a confluent layer. The DNA concentration for this specimen is approximately 300 milligrams per millimeter, and the magnification is approximately 400x. The digital image presented above was originally recorded on Fujichrome 64T transparency film using a Nikon Optiphot-Pol microscope with crossed polarized illumination. Exposures were recorded about 2 f-steps under the recommended value given by an in-camera photomultiplier and were push-processed approximately 1 f-steps in the first E-6 developer.
