German Mask Cat

German Mask Cat

While examining an old East German mask utilized to build integrated circuits during the Cold War, we stumbled across a cat icon that was repeated across the mask surface. Perhaps the designer was a cat fan and the icon symbolizes a pet, or maybe the cat was a rogue found in a dumpster behind the chip fab. We would appreciate any information about the origin of this silicon artwork. The wafer was loaned to us by Marcus Jacob of the Precision Engineering Division of the University of Applied Sciences, in Jena.
