This California license plate was found on the MIPS R4000 (revision A) microprocessor that powered many of the Silicon Graphics Indigo and Onyx workstations and servers in the early 1990s. The actual number on the license plate (R4000A) reflects the revision of this microprocessor. There is also a nice reference to "The State of the Art", which referred to the design of this microprocessor when it was first placed into service.
