The AB (I=S=1/2) SpectrumThis tutorial demonstrates the primary effects of scalar coupling. When Dn/J between spins is not large (e.g. < 100) the spins are strongly coupled. Strong coupling influences both the transition intensities and the observed splittings, often making spectral interpretation more difficult. A weakly coupled homonuclear "AX" system has 4 transitions of equal intensity with both A and X signals split by the J value. Strongly coupled "AB" systems show variations from this, as is evident in the spectrum below.
