Web Site Corals Creatures Hiding In Silicon
Ever wonder what keeps your CPU from crashing? Maybe it's the patron saint of technology, Dogbert, that's secretly etched on the silicon wafer. Or maybe it's Godzilla hidden on the surface of a MIPS R10000 CPU.
Dogbert and Godzilla are among two hidden etchings being showcased by a web site called Silicon Zoo. Using microscopy, the creators of the sight have searched the surfaces of silicon from AMD to Intel for Easter eggs engineers left behind.
Among other etchings you can view at the Silicon Zoo exhibit include a chili pepper on Cyrix's 5x86 CPU, initials of engineers surrounding the word "Klamuth" on the first Pentium IIs, and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the movie Ghostbusters on a Weitek math co-processor.
