Check out micro.magnet.fsu.edu/creatures/index.html for a listing of cartoon characters and other graphic images found in the metalization of many chips. There's even a Cyrix 5x86 with a chili pepper (jalapeno?).

There was a story a while ago about a couple of former Microsoft (or was it AMD) employees working for Intel who apparently managed to get the words "Bill Sux" into the etching of the pentium2 core...the two guys were fired...

Turns out the whole story was a hoax...Is the site you link to supposed to be serious or a joke? I couldn't tell...I personally find it hard to believe and I'm very skeptical.

Phobos -- It's for real. I got the lead from EE Times. This is just a collection of some engineers' humorous artistic dabblings on otherwise serious work. Check out the other pix on the site.

You can also check their home page for more info.

Harvey's right - it's for real.

Intel policy is not to allow these 'pictures' on microprocessors. It's considered a reliability issue (don't ask me how). So, there aren't any that I'm aware of on Intel parts. Certainly I know we are not allowed to "sign" our designs.

I wasn't aware that the "Bill sux" 'picture' was a hoax... was it really?

Okay, I believe it's real...

Yeah, the bill sux thing was a hoax...I know I read the story at http://slashdot.org/ but I couldn't find it there again...I couldn't find it at voodooextreme either, and I'm pretty sure they linked to slashdot.org's story of it. slashdot.org also found the original image from which the "bill sux" was created.

A friend sent me the url for that place a while back.
If you get the chance to go through all the various pages you'll find some incredible artwork. There's on of a parrot that's really something. And another that was copied from a photograph of two people kissing.
Amazing how good some of this is given the size.

pm -- I have a distant cousin who is a design engineer at Intel. I sent this info to him, and he replied with the info about their policy. He says that extra traces can be a source of stray capacitance on the die, which can screw up performance.

Still, both the info and the art are good for a chuckle.
